Midsummer fires

On the midsummer night we burn big bonfires usually on the edges of lakes. As you sit on the platform you can see the smoke rising and light of the fire from many sides of the lake. The old tradition comes from the belief that it keeps the evil spirits away: as on special nights like midsummer when sunlight stays put, spirits are thought to be restless.

Midsummer was also a celebration of fertility, which is why still a lot of traditional ways to improve it are part of a midsummer night. Midsummer magic is still used a lot, now more as a game or entertainment, also as memories that will pass on to new generations.

Most common trick is to pick seven different flowers and put them under your pillow for the midsummer night, and your future husband will appear in your dream.

Bonne Année

As a Finnish person living in France always makes me think Finland in relation to the other world, naturally. And how me as a Finnish person can relate to it, how I might do it differently back home, and how people back home might relate to things from where I am now, or the wider scale of things.
2015 I encountered so many racist, hateful and violent thoughts, coming towards me or my surroundings, I found it almost inexplicable. How much it happened, on what kind of scale and why.
I hope 2016 will be better in that sense, that I can see less of this, or when I do, I could at least react to it somehow stronger.

I just read this new year's speech, and wanted to share it here. Maybe it opens up something about our ideas where we come from, how different it is and what is and is not. CLICK!

I wish all of you a peaceful year.
